This multi-day lesson introduces students to the legacy of the 2003 U.S. invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq. It begins by engaging them in viewing some maps and taking a quiz to see what they know about the country. Next, students read a speech by President George Bush explaining the U.S. goals in Iraq. The lesson also features an interactive presentation and video on the invasion and introduces them to the work of Iraqi journalist Ghaith Abdul-Ahad who argues that the U.S. invasion of Iraq fueled sectarian violence which led to the rise of ISIS.
